mandriva installation on acer 5050 laptop
April 20, 2008 by bearrider
Kubuntu left a lot to be desired on my machine so I looked around for another good KDE distro and found Mandriva!
What works out of the box:
- External Speakers! Hallelujah! Finally!!
- Desktop effects run right off the live CD
What doesn´t:
- Webcam still doesn´t work but that´s really low on priority
- Power management is still a pain (I´m looking into this, expect a post soon)
- Bluetooth needs a lot of tweaking go get to work
Repository Setup :
Setting up repositories in Mandriva is not quite as easy as Ubuntu´s sources.list way. However, no need to fret. Head over here and follow the instructions. Voila!
Also, you´ll find that the repository locks every now and again with a ¨”URPMI DATABASE LOCKED”¨. This post is what you´ll need.
Very easy and intuitive , Mandriva is the Ubuntu for the KDE fan!
Officials Mandriva repositories are easy to setup :
+ method 1 :
Mandriva Control Center -> Software Management -> Configure media for install and updates
Then click on the Add button, and then select “full set of sources”
+ method 2 :
directly launch drakrpm-edit-media” and click on the add button
+ method 3 :
from CLI, use urpmi.addmedia.

And BTW, there’s also a One version for Gnome. As equally supported by Mandriva than the KDE One.

Hey, I’m a kubuntu user on somewhat similar hardware… a 5050 which is a little over a year old, with no webcam or bluetooth. External speakers work fine, but they have a separate mixer channel which may need to be shown in Kmix, on mine its called “Surround”
Gutsy worked perfectly, Hardy is rocking even more….. Wireless is an issue, but Ndiswrapper works well
you can see my write up for issues with this laptop at http://nosrednaekim.wordpress.com/2007/12/04/acer-5050-with-kubuntu-710-gutsy/
Somehow i missed the point. Probably lost in translation
Anyway … nice blog to visit.
cheers, Handcuffs.
